Hello Everyone,

Recieve Passport

Once your Visa gets approved in the Visa Interview, you must submit the passport to the Visa Officer. The Visa Officer normally tells that it will take 3 to 5 days for Visa Stamping to be done and then you can collect the Passport. So this post will entirely focus on collecting your passport once your Visa has been approved. I will be providing all the information with respect to the topic in an FAQ manner.

Here are some of the most common questions that students have.

What should I submit to the Visa Officer once my Visa gets approved?

At the start of the Interview itself the Visa Officer will ask for your passport and I-20. Once your Visa gets approved the Visa Officer will keep your passport and return the I-20. Thus, only passport has to be submitted.

When will I get my Passport back?

The Visa Officer generally informs you that it will take 3 to 5 days for your passport to be ready. But generally your passport is ready by 1 or 2 Days.

How will I come to know whether my Passport is ready or not?

You will be informed whether your passport is ready or not through email and also through a SMS to your cell phone. This facility provided is really great. You will first receive information that the passport is with the US Embassy and then you will receive information stating that your passport is ready for pick-up.

How can I get my Passport back?

When you schedule the Visa Interview, you will see a list of passport/visa collection centers. You can choose a location convenient for you. If your visa is approved, Blue dart will deliver the passport and visa to the specified location. No extra charges will be levied as you already pay it along with the application. If you paid the extra Rs.300 then your visa and passport will be delivered by Blue Dart to the address you specified at the time you listed the courier service.

By what time should I collect my passport from the Collection Centers if I have not used the Courier Service (Rs. 300)?

If you opted to pick the passport from the service centers then the passport has to be collected within 14 days; or if you opted for one of the Blue Dart Courier service locations then the passport has to be picked within 7 days. If you are unable to collect your passport then the passport will be sent back to the Embassy. In that case you need to pick your passport from the Embassy.

Can I change the delivery location of the passport?

Yes, you have an option to change the delivery location of the passport. You can do that before 11.59 pm on the day prior to the day of the interview. You can do it online or through the call centers. There is no extra charge for this service.

What Documents to carry for collecting the Passport?

You must be carrying the following things: –

  • Carry a Government Identity Proof (PAN Card, Aadhar Card, Driving License etc.)
  • Carry a photocopy (Xerox) of that Identity Proof as you need to submit it.
  • Remember your Passport Number as you will be asked.

Make sure the photocopy is clear and readable.

Who can collect my Passport?

It’s not mandatory that you have to come in person to collect your passport. You can ask your family members or relatives or friends too for collecting your passport. Following Documents needs to be carried by the person who will be collecting your passport: –

  • A letter of authority from you authorizing them to pick up your passport.
  • Carry a Government Identity Proof (PAN Card, Aadhar Card, Driving License etc.)
  • Carry a photocopy (Xerox) of that Identity Proof as you need to submit it.
  • Your Passport Number.

What should Letter of Authority contain?

The letter of authority must be signed by you. The letter of authority should also contain

  • Your Name.
  • Your Representative’s full name as it appears on their Government identity Proof that they will be carrying with them.
  • Small description stating you allow the representative to collect your passport.

When should I go to collect my Passport?

Generally you can go in between 10 am to 5 pm to collect your passport.

What should I check once I receive my passport?

Once you receive your passport, please check the following things: –

  • The Visa has been pasted properly in the passport.
  • Photo.
  • Name (Surname and Given Name).
  • Sex.
  • Date of Birth.
  • Visa Validity (Issue and Expiration Date).
  • Passport Number.
  • Annotation (Name and Address of your University that you will be attending).
