Hello Everyone,

Bean Pot Hockey

Northeastern University is considered to be one of the top universities for MS in CS and IS. I studied in Northeastern from August 2013 to July 2015. It was a great experience to me. This post will focus on the on campus jobs that are available in Northeastern University. Over the past few years the number of students coming to the University have increased many folds and hence there is always a competition for part time jobs here.

Note that you are allowed to work for ONLY 20 hours per week legally on the F1 student visa. Some students do work off-campus but that is risky and not suggestible.

I have personally been a teaching assistant for several courses in Information Systems from August 2014 to July 2015.

On-campus jobs available at NEU

Research Assistant:

RA is given on basis of your experience and your expertise in that field. You are required to help the professor doing a research in various ways like developing applications, providing live data for testing, etc. Few students volunteer under some professors in their first semester and if they perform well, they can sometimes be taken as RA in the next semester. You will surely be interviewed before offering the job. This is a very rare job that you can end up getting. But never loose hope, one of my friends did get one in his first semester. And the reason being, he applied it well before the semester began and had good expertise in the field. He did follow “The early bird gets the worm” phrase :).

Pay: $15 per hour

Teaching Assistant:

TA is given based on your performance in a course. For example if you get an A grade in first semester then you can apply for TA in that course for the second semester. Getting an A does not end up fetching you a TA position. You must have very good knowledge in almost every concept in that course because you might be interviewed for a TA position even if you end up getting an A grade.

Sometimes some other departments post a job opening for TA like the Business schools or Medical schools, etc.

Pay: $15 per hour

Graduate Assistant:

In general, GA is given if you get a 4 GPA in a semester. (Not sure if it is there now in CS). Few years back if you would have got 4 GPA in a semester, you would have ended up getting a Dean scholarship that waives most of your fees for next semester. You will surely be interviewed before offering the job.

Sometimes some other departments post a job opening for GA like the Business schools or Medical schools. So you can go ahead and apply for them too online and if you are lucky enough you can get one.

Pay: $15 per hours.

TA, GA and RA are also sometimes posted online.

There are other On campus jobs also like working at the grocery stores, mail room services, student cafeteria, Library, sports arena etc..But you will get them only if you are very vigilant and on the toes. Also it will be very useful if you come early to the university. You will end up having fair chances of getting one on campus if you come early (3-4 weeks before the classes start).

RSO is one of the most famous jobs at NEU campus. The applications are given to students who complete at least one semester at NEU.

Pay for the jobs mentioned above will be somewhere between $7-$10 depending on the job.

Whether you can manage an on-campus with the course work completely depends upon your capabilities and time management skills. That is very important skill you need to acquire here. Few student don’t take up any on-campus in their first semester to avoid taking risk and also the core mandatory subject in first semester called PDP is a bit time consuming and complicated.

How are the placements for CS after graduating? Which companies do students get placed in? Also, what about internships?

I have got admit from nyu poly for MS in CS and NEU for MS in CS.

I am a bit confused to choose between nyu and neu. I am bit inclined towards NYU cause I have received financial aid.

What would u suggest in terms of jobs and internship scenarios.
And other factors which would affect after graduating i.e on campus jobs, funding available.

    Hi Shrinivas,

I got an admit for MS in IS and I have few questions:

    1) Hows the CO-OP scenario at NEU for IS students? How much is the hourly pay? Is it obtainable?

    2) Hows the monthly expenses? How much did it cost you per month?

    3) How much is the avg salary after graduation?

I am really looking forward to your answers. I am in a big dilemma since the cost of attendance is too high. Please help!

    Hey Srinivas,
I recently got on admit for Master’s of science in Operations Research in Northeastern University. I have a few questions regarding the same.
    1. Is it advisable to take up an on campus job during the 1st Semester?
    2. What is the off campus housing scenario near Northeastern like?
    3. Do you by any chance have an idea about my master’s course?
    Thanks in advance.
