Firstly there is always a Myth that both degrees are one and the same. This is completely wrong and these two are Different Degrees that are offered by the Universities.
Students those who have completed there Under Graduation can opt for either of the two Degrees.
To put the difference in simple words, A Master of Engineering Degree is inclined more towards the side of Professional Development. Generally there is no research requirement for this Degree and is very less competitive as compared to Master Of Science Degree. If you are preparing for a PhD then Master of Engineering is not a degree to go for. Generally People who take up Master of Engineering will be Working in some companies and will be returning to their Companies after the completion of the Degree. Master of Engineering is also used by Professionals to climb the corporate ladder in the Professional Field.
Now if we see Master of Science Degree, which normally students opt for, has a thesis requirement and admission process has a lot of competition. If you are interested in pursuing for PhD, Universities generally select students who have completed their MS.
From the Companies point of view, they rank these two degrees almost equally with MS having a little Advantage. The advantage of the MEng is that it is easier to get admitted, easier to complete, at the cost of a less focused education. The advantage of the MS is that you develop a real superior skills in your specialty and are more able to continue to the PhD.
